ZA WARUDO! TOKI WO TOMARE!
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is a popular adventure manga series original run from 1987 till present, created by Hirohiko Araki. The series depicts the various generations of the Joestar family as they embark on adventures and encounter friends and enemies, the story all centred around the concept of Stand abilities, a supernatural powers with physical manifestations.
For my project, I have chosen to recreate a classic scene from the third series of JOJO, where one of the main characters, Polnareff, encounters the main villain, Dio in an Egypt mansion. To enhance the immersive experience for the audience, I have added a portal that allows users to step into the scene and experience it from a first-person perspective, as if they were Polnareff encountering his enemy on the staircase. In the original plot, this is the first time Polnareff experiences Dio’s Stand ability, so I have incorporated a screen tap gesture to demonstrate this pivotal moment in the storyline.

To achieve this project, my main goal is to create an immersive environment for the audience to experience the story. I have chosen to recreate the classic scene from chapter 248 of Stardust Crusaders, which is considered one of the most iconic scenes in the entire JOJO’s Bizarre Adventure series. This particular scene takes place in a cramped interior setting, making it ideal for re-creating in mixed reality.
To ensure accuracy and authenticity, I thoroughly analyzed storyboards from three different sources: the original manga, the animation, and the game adaptation. Based on my research and analysis, I have developed my version of the scene, taking into consideration the details and nuances from these various sources. My goal is to faithfully restore this memorable scene and provide users with an immersive experience that closely resembles the original story.
Dio's stand ability is:

Here is the original clip from the anime that I am using as a reference for my re-scene project. This clip provides important context and story background information.
Stairs
Purple backlight
Dim environment (Dio is a vampire)
Airflow appears when Dio debut
Background music for spooky vibe
1. Polnareff met Dio under the stairs. Polnareff and Did negotiated
3. Polnareff go upstairs
4. Dio used his stand ability
5. Polnareff was moved down stairs
6. Dio disappeared
As part of my concept for recreating this scene, I envision a dim environment with purple lighting to create an eerie atmosphere that matches the tone of the original story. I plan to incorporate Dio’s personal theme OST to further enhance the immersion and evoke the same emotions as the original scene.
In terms of interaction, I intend to use a two-step process where Polnareff’s (camera perspective) movement is triggered by user input. Each time Polnareff takes a step up the staircase, the camera perspective will reset back to its original position, creating a looping effect that simulates the continuous ascent of the staircase.
Reenactments of classic scenes are highly anticipated by manga fans, particularly when they provide an immersive experience from a first-person perspective, allowing them to witness iconic characters in action.
As a re-scene project of a classic anime, my primary focus is on the anime’s fanbase. After receiving feedback from fandom groups and conducting research and testing, here are my findings:
Dio’s stand ability can be effectively demonstrated through the use of visibility and colour filters.
Also the feedback is great, I received a lot of expectation on it.
In summary, the primary interaction in my project will be limited to screen tap gesture. Upon tapping the screen, Dio will re-appear and disappear above the stage with different lines, accompanied by background music pause and airflow effects. To further detail Dio’s power demonstration, I have observed in anime clips that Dio’s power is often accompanied by clock stop sound effects and a colour reverse circle to indicate his affecting zone. Therefore, I have added a subtract material sphere to replicate this feature in my re-scene.
Repeating the sent down to the original position give the impression of an error rather than an intentional experience, as the camera is typically an immovable object in Spark AR. Additionally, the file size of existing model I found are way too big.
However, one limitation of the scene is
that it is confined to a single environment, and the file size in Spark AR is restricted in terms of model usage. Relying solely on a model exhibition may not be enough to sustain audience interest. Moreover,
creating interactive features within the
constraints of limited accessibility can be challenging.
Due to the limitations of my topic, my main source of reference is limited to the animated performance of this scene. While there are coloured fan-made manga and game adaptations that cater to player’s visibility, I believe that the animated scenes can best express the scope of this particular part of the story.
The most time-consuming process of this entire project has been the preparation section. For the character, most model file I found were in pmx file format, which could not be imported into Blender or C4D directly. Additionally, the pmx import plugin for Blender was outdated. The first feasible model I used had excessive texture operations, which resulted in file size limitations in Spark AR upon importing. However, I was able to rig my final model using Mixamo, which allowed me to create a movable character in my project.

To achieve my desired portal effect and make audiences feel like they are entering the story, I created an outer building and set its opacity to 0. However, I encountered a mistake in choosing an oversized file for the interior object, which was luckily resolved using the Meta Spark Toolkit extension in Blender. For audio, I selected voice lines from the game of dim speak out the name of his stand ability and added them along with clock sound effects.
