Christmas is coming…in eight month!
I aim to develop an interactive and delightful AR face filter using Spark AR studio that encapsulates the joyful essence of Christmas. The filter will be created to cater to people of all ages with a primary focus on providing a family-friendly experience. However, my target audience for this project is kids as they are the most enthusiastic and excited about Christmas. Children tend to be more receptive to any activity related to Christmas and have a special appreciation for the magic and charm of the season. By designing a Christmas AR face filter keeping kids in mind, we can capture their sense of excitement and wonder and create a memorable experience for them.

Why Christmas?

Because Christmas garners most active users on social media during the year.
Christmas on December 25th, is a significant holiday for people all around the world. It commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ and provides an opportunity for individuals to spend quality time with their loved ones. Apart from its historical, cultural, and religious roots that contributed to its popularity, Christmas has become closely linked with commerce, making it a vital driver of consumer spending such as decoration, gifts, food, and other holiday-related items. This holiday’s economic impact has led to marketing opportunities on digital platforms and promotions through various media, especially on social media platform.
On the left, the first chart displays the weekly dollar volume trend in the retail sector, with Christmas showing a marked increase in sales. The two statistics presented below demonstrate the number of active social media users in Facebook as the reference, and the third chart illustrates that users tend to increase during the fourth quarter (Oct-Dec).
As a result, Christmas, being the most influential holiday in Western culture, is likely to have the highest number of views on social media platforms during this period.

For Whom?

Who has the best time on Christmas? Kids.
Christmas is an occasion that brings families together to share love and joy with one another. And the happiest group during this time is definitely the kids. Maybe it’s the presents that make their eyes sparkle like Christmas lights or the opportunity to stuff their faces with cookies and candy canes without getting in trouble.Whatever the reason, kids sure know how to have a good time on Christmas.
My project’s objective is to create a face filter with a family-friendly atmosphere that caters to children’s interests. Based their favourite: sweets, animals, and cute things, sprinkling in bright and warm colours. As a result, I intend to include these components and create a sense of engagement by adding interactive features that will surprise and delight my audiences, making them feel more involved in the holiday festival.

To determine the most popular face filter, the most effective approach is to directly investigate and gather information from social media platforms. Thus, I conducted research on Instagram and TikTok to identify the most frequently used face filters based on the number of posts, and conducted calculations to analyze the features of each trending filter.

The features include:
Interaction
Object
Features
Major audience

Research

To gain a deeper understanding of my audiences, I created a survey for five participants: two were recently started middle school, and three young adults in college.

The survey questions include:
What is your favourite animal:
List down things remind you about Christmas:
List down things you like the most about Christmas:
Choose your favourite face filter, from any platform:

interactive filter like testing and face distortion are more likeable to younger audiences.

Survey

What is trending right now?

From my observations, I have noticed that different groups of people have varying preferences when it comes to AR filter effects. Generally, highly randomized and interactive effects tend to be well-received by most people. Make-up and facial beautifying effects are particularly popular among female audiences. Younger audiences tend to prefer facial distortion and funny filters, and are less concerned with modifying their appearance, instead enjoying the playful nature of the filter.
For family-oriented filters, there is a preference for less modification to facial features and more holiday-themed decorations. In this case, cute and festive content is highly welcomed. During my research, in all the posts featuring Christmas lenses, pets, especially dogs, occupied a large portion of them. Since Christmas is a family-friendly holiday, I believe that incorporating animals as the main characters in my AR filter would be a great choice.

The Design

Christmas is a holiday that has its roots in Christianity, celebrating the birth of Jesus. I drew inspiration from Byzantine art and decided to incorporate a rotating halo behind the user’s head to reflect this theme. Through my research, I found that cute and playful animals  often associate with the concept of family, also evoke a sense of joy and happiness during the holiday season. To further enhance the Christmas atmosphere, I added falling snow as a reminder of the winter wonderland during this holiday.
As a final touch, I added an interactive element to surprise the users that triggered by mouth open, puppies will start to sing a  Christmas song. Adding an extra layer of engagement to the filter, and ties in with the festive theme.
